The Dangers Of Tanning Salons

It's Official! Exposure of your skin to the indoor lamps associated with Tanning Salons is just as dangerous as laying out in the sun on a hot summer's day. Over 1 million Americans are in serious danger of suffering the dire consequences of skin cancer by visiting these salons.

The reason for the danger is found in the UVA and UVB rays that are projected onto the skin from the bulbs of the lamps and could lead to problems associated with skin damage, including melanoma and non melanoma related skin cancers. This latter finding is the result of a recent study published in the Journal Of The National Cancer Institute.

Fashion Definitions, Terms and Acronyms

Illusion bodice - A bodice made of sheer material giving the illusion of no bodice.

Pieced - A look created by sewing several pieces of material together to form the garment, much like a quilt.

Cowl neck - A neckline featuring a piece of material attached to a garment at the neck, which may be used as a hood or draped loosely in a swag from shoulder to shoulder at the front neckline or back.

In addition, exposure to tanning may also:

  • Affect the ability of human cells to repair DNA damage as a result of exposure to UV rays

  • Result in fatal skin lesions - alarmingly being found in young adults and teenagers.

Over the past year it is estimated that over 700 people were admitted to emergency departments with related problems resulting from tanning salon exposure. Indeed, there is no such thing as a safe way of tanning you skin whether it be from the natural exposure to the sun, or from tanning salons.

Not only do you enhance your chances of contracting a skin related problem, you are also accelerating the ageing process on your body. In fact, the reason that your skin does tan is because it is reacting to the damage being done to it. We all need to be very aware of the real problems associated with the sun and our skin and public information and education on artificial tanning, in particular, needs to be at the forefront of advertising campaigns related to this issue.

Some alarming figures for all to ponder:

Over 1 million new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in America each year. In 2002 over 87,000 people were diagnosed with melanoma - the deadliest form of skin cancer and 7,400 deaths resulted.

With summer fast approaching in the Northern Hemisphere, perhaps it is timely for everybody to consider the dangers of laying out in the sun or in tanning salons. Please be very careful and avoid direct exposure to UVA and UVB rays. They could, literally, kill you.
