Mineral Makeup Ingredients: Good Stuff Inside

What is it that we like about mineral makeup? It’s sheer, light, and most importantly, doesn’t make us look like our sweet, but over-done Great Aunt Margaret. Mostly though, it is the good ingredients that make up the mineral cosmetics we find the most appealing.

Natural is a relative term. For mineral makeup, it means that the minerals came from the earth. Some mineral cosmetics have these natural ingredients plus a few extras used as fillers and preservatives. They are not necessarily harmful, but the choice is yours as to what your makeup can contain.

Mineral makeup makes use of the natural minerals of the earth to enhance the look of every woman. What make this possible are the ingredients used to prepare your foundation, concealer, eye shadow, and other products. Cosmetics that contain the following ingredients will keep your skin healthy when you wear makeup.

1. Mica – You’ll see this ingredient in most mineral preparations. Mica has many forms, the most common of which is serecite mica. This mineral helps the other components to adhere to your face where they are supposed to stay and stay nicely. Mica also uses the reflection of the light to hide wrinkles, large pores, and lines.

2. Titanium Dioxide – this mineral is big in the concealing department. It hides pores and lines by reflecting light as well as adding a brightener of sorts to the makeup. The overall appearance is still a matte natural finish. Titanium dioxide does offer the properties of sun protection but adding a sunscreen to your skin before applying mineral makeup reinforces what comes naturally.

3. Zinc Oxide – You don’t have to streak it down your nose or across your cheeks like beach folk. Zinc is a healthy mineral that helps to heal the body. Along with titanium dioxide, it provides a measure of sun protection even when wet.

4. Iron Oxides – We want natural makeup but a little color doesn’t hurt things. Iron oxide comes in a variety of pigments. These colors can be used in subtle measure to shade foundations for all skin types. Brighter pigments are useful for eye shadows and blush.

5. Silica – For a soft silky appearance and feel to the skin, be sure that silica is an ingredient in your mineral makeup. Any excess oil in your skin is absorbed by this mineral. Extra oil causes makeup to cake and look artificial.

6. Boron nitride – Like silica, boron nitride absorbs excess oil so your face won’t shine like you’ve been sweating. Instead, your skin will glow.

To be natural, mineral makeup must contain natural ingredients like the minerals named above. Other products like kaolin clay or rice powder are added also. Whether you choose to use these ingredients is up to you.

Choose carefully depending on your skin issues and choices for ingredients. Try more than one kind and compare.
